As we headed home the sky in the park was wonderful. The mountains never looked better. What a perfect day. These where all taken on Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive.

Late afternoon the sky turned cloudy making the deep blue much paler. We had a great day, the weather was warm, and the mountains were putting on a show. It was beautiful!!

Santa Elena Canyon

We finally made it down to Santa Elena Canyon. This is a must see on any visit to the Big Bend. The pictures tell the story.

We had lunch at the overlook area

There is a short trail taking you into the canyon

The Rio Grande River flows out and makes the natural border between Mexico and Texas. Mexico is on the left side of this picture.

The views were wonderful

This is one of the best areas of the Big Bend. Take the Ross Maxwell Scenic drive down here for the best scenery.

Castolon Store

We stopped off at Castolon and visited the La Harmonia store. Lots of history-read more about it HERE

Terlingua Ghost Town

Took a trip down South yesterday and on our way to Santa Elena Canyon we stopped off at Study Butte and Terlingua. Lots of interesting things to see in Terlingua.

Used to be a mining town of about 2,000 back in the days.

Terlingua now has less than 100 residents and is a tourist town.

Changes in Alpine

I mentioned in my last post that some changes were coming….

First a new job for me, I’m now working at the local True Value Hardware store in the paint dept. where I have had some experience many years ago at Sherwin-Williams. I like it, putting in a lot of hours which is ok since we have made several trips to DFW recently. Laurie is still at the Guest lodging which is nice since it’s just around the corner from True Value.

Second, a new location for us to park the RV. After searching everywhere in Alpine we finally got a call from someone with hookups on acreage. So the scenery is better, it’s much quieter, and we like it a lot. Our closest neighbors are some horses.

We had our friends from Marathon drop by a few days ago and brought some homemade tamales. Man they are good!!

Mmmmm good!!

The Big Bend area has received a lot of rain in the last month and everything is so green.

This is a roadside park at Ft Davis where we had lunch on the way back to Alpine from DFW.

Big Bend Visit part 2

I took about 300+ photos on our visit yesterday so it’s taken a while to go through them. Here is a few more I wanted to share.

Big Bend National Park Visit

We planned on a few hikes down at the park today despite the threat of rain.

Low clouds were still over the tops of the mountains when we arrived this morning.

Beautiful scenery

We hiked around to a dry wash and down to the spring

As we were coming back I noticed some clouds towards the basin area.

Looked like it was raining just east of us

We finally got back to the trail head and wanted to check out the rain clouds

And one more…

Not a lot of hiking but a great day, cool rain made it enjoyable. We headed back and run into more rain on the way to Marathon. Once we arrived back it had rained there as well.
